Reading against the summary

A sample note on why a synopsis is not a substitute for the book, the paper, or the argument.

A summary is a map of someone else’s emphasis. That can be a gift when you are lost. It is a poor replacement for the terrain.

Papers have a shape: the cautious sentence in the middle, the ugly chart, the limitation the authors buried in a clause. Books have a tempo. You cannot outsource the time it takes to be changed by either of them and still claim the change.

I use summaries as an index. I try not to let them become the reading.
